Sandwiches in Japan are a completely satisfying mini-experience— the crunch, the savory flavors, the compact efficiency, each part matters when it comes to making the perfect sandwich. Last year I finally got to try pork katsu sandwiches during my trips to Japan, and I was super excited to try this new spot near my house, KONBI.
On the famous Sunset Blvd., KONBI makes perfect Japanese style sandwiches, pastries, and has a selection of creamy coffees and tea lattes. The rusty orange exterior stands out from the street, while the light woods and kitchen metals of the interior feel industrial but inviting. Everyone sits in close quarters with just 12 seats at the kitchen counter, literally an arm's length away from the kitchen staff.
Aside from the savory goodness of their traditional pork katsu sandwich, KONBI offers an Eggplant, Layered Omelette, and an Egg Salad sandwich. Their photogenic Egg Salad sandwich might initially be a turnoff to those who haven't yet experienced Japanese-style egg salad, but they're a signature item and a can't miss. None of that relish or celery like in American egg salads, this one is a sneaky, kick-y egg salad with kewpie mayo, horseradish, and créme frâiche. Don't even get me started on the bread. Each sandwich is built with just the right amount of crunch, a chewy interior, filling, and then a substantial bite-thru to satisfaction.
